We’ve been streaming anything and everything here at Search Engine Strategies in Chicago.  Today we’re streaming the keynote with Bill Tancer, then we’ll be live in the Expo Hall doing on-site interviews and updates. In the afternoon we’ll stream the Orion panel and in the evening will be the Webmaster Roundtable, which will be a blast.  If you’re in the area make sure to stop by our booth #505 and say hi.  Who knows, you might end up on the air.

The Future of Search Conferences…

Well, I can without a doubt, say that the last few years in this space have been quite a ride.  I’ve been doing this for quite sometime now and I’ve written some posts in the past regarding our evolution online. I think a lot of this is overlooked and we see people repeating a lot of the same mistakes that we made as newbies online. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it!”

The good news is people, the web is still growing & so is the number of daily users. The game for the majors has been to grab the users at their point of entry online, and at any entry they can find whether it be via a desktop, mobile, gaming platform, etc.

The cool thing is, in the beginning…the engines didn’t like us online marketers very much.  There’s wasn’t the hand holding that you see going on today. This has had a positive affect on Search Conferences, because the engines have embraced the community fully now.

But what happens when the community divides itself? What happens when rumor and gossip become the foremost topic on our lips instead of the latest, greatest, hot news? Well, you have link baiters. It’s only a point of evolution as we marketers are now a fixture online. This does not mean the end of SEO as you know it. It just means there’s more change for you to be aware of. This has been this single largest constant in SEO I know of that one needs to be able to cope with:  CHANGE.

So when search conference personalities go one way and others go another way…and then comes the wave of politics to follow… I contend yet still…EVOLUTION! It doesn’t mean you need to pick sides, it means you need to be loyal and true to yourself and your clients. Then you can find where you fit in the newest iteration of the space…as it’s constantly changing.

So it pleases me to find someone who recently wrote on their blog about the spirit of search conferences remaining as they had perceived them at the NYC show…and reading their description of it…my reply is best stated as the following:

THE SPIRIT OF SEO’S HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME, IT’S THE PERCEPTION OTHERS HAVE OF US WHICH HAS CHANGED.

As an old-timer around here, I can say without undo haste, the spirit you witnessed at SMX, is the same witnessed at Pubcon or Adtech or SES and many other smaller shows around the world not mentioned here as well as all the local SEO Meet-ups. I am glad you got to witness this and be a part of it, it’s cool to be a part of this community.

For those new or old, even though we may be seeing an overall economic impact here in the states and other countries abroad. This industry is still growing and its still here, which means more conferences and more of that good ole SEO Spirit!

Changing of The Guard on Oct 14th SEO Rockstars

Edit: SEO Rockstars has been canceled this week. Stewart Quealy will join us on October 14th.

So coming up tomorrow on tomorrow’s SEO Rockstars  1pm EST, that’s right…more Search Engine Strategies chit chat.  With Kevin Ryan moving over into an oversight role for the Advisory Board at SES, that means change is afoot with the show itself.

So tomorrow on the SEO Rockstars, we’ll be talking to Stewart Quealy who’s been promoted to one of the peeps at the helm programming Search Engine Strategies. So we’ll have a nice 30 min fireside chat tomorrow to discuss the things of interest, import and maybe even something boring and nonsensical just for your amusement.

No, seriously, Marilyn Crafts as well as Stewart were promoted and are ready to rock out!  This next edition of the SEO Rockstars will find out exactly what the vision is for SES and where they see it in 12 months.

See you alll tomorrow, right here at 1pm EST for SEO Rockstars. FYI, I’ll be joined by special guest co-host: JIm Hedger. Come and join us.

SES Continues to Make Programming Changes

So some may have seen the writing on the wall. Other’s may want to say, “I told you so!”

I say, “GET OVER IT!” As far as Search Evolution goes, this is nothing new. Time and again, we have seen our community fragment and move places due to certain loyalties that key people have been able to garner.  Nothing wrong with this, all interest groups needs a leader.

Thank G-D, that there are numerous “interests” within the SEO community. Which gives way to numerous leaders and mentors to look up to for guidance.  Just as with the old days, you still need to do your own research and make up your own mind.  However, we’re an industry people.

We are more than just a few people gathering in a bar somewhere trading traffic or checks over a beer. We’ve grown to a massive global industry of professionals that requires leaders. Not just 1, but many respectable voices so that many different kinds of SEO’s all over the world can find someone with whom they fit with on an intellectual level, but on a level that can challenge what you know about the space in which you work and seek to provide a fit for a small part of the void which is the need for solid, reliable SEO’s/SEM’s.

I think a lot of focus has been placed on who was driving the boat over there, but I do have to say that there are enough people…with enough invested in this show for those of us who have 2 sets of eyes to not still see that SES can and still will be a formidable show.

We’ve seen our space divide and split and re-invent itself numerous times…the great thing is…this industry is obviously not going anywhere.

Stewart, Marilyn, Kevin…congrats and as we know all too well around here…the show must go on!

Coming up later today at 4pm EST. I will be interviewing Kevin Ryan during this weeks SEO Rockstars.  We’ll be talking about everything from attendee feedback to expectations being met for attendees, to session highlights and so much more.

We’ll also provide some debriefing of the evening events, and of course in my opinion…the highlight of evening events at this show…SearchBash.

We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so make sure you get logged into watch and chat.

Tornados, Shoutouts, and Heckler Guy: My first SES experience

Well, I feel like I just got off a tornado, and let me tell you – the ride was awesome! I am of course referring to my first experience at SES. It was a whirling, exhilarating good time. From the show floor to the sessions to the Orion panels to Google Dance to the party of all parties: SearchBash!

Highlights from the event:

Throwing a few back with my peeps from Rock Solid Colo and Media Whiz

Getting to know Jim Hedger

Listening to Cindy Krum’s presentation “the death of the .mobi” as it gets interrupted by some heckler who owns 700 .mobi domains (Good for you, heckler guy! Tell the world that “It just hasn’t caught on here .Mobi’s huge in Japan!” –just like vending machines that sell used girls’ underwear for adults, dressing up like video game characters, buying air, or eating dog. Don’t you worry, dude; everything in Japan will totally catch on here.)

Conducting interviews for the first time

Daron’s presentation – I wasn’t actually there for it, but I heard he gave “the most impassioned and energetic speech by someone with laryngitis ever.” (Not my words – I would have used bigger ones). It was awesome; clearly the best presentation at SES. It changed my life –twice. (He’s my boss.)

Chillin out with Paul O’Brien in the Fairmont Hotel Lobby

Watching Becky Ryan and posse getting booed from the Rock Band stage (seriously, you guys need to stay home more)

Sharing a room with Brasco

Sharing great stories with Jeff Eckman from Ion Interactive after the show was over

And of course, the swinging antics of the trapeze act at SearchBash. If you missed it; you missed out! The party was on!

The Hottest Party In The Search Industry

August 14, 2008 by Daron Babin
Filed under Search Bash Party Details

So it’s no secret, and we know it. For those who know the story, have attended, you get it.

For those who have never attended a SearchBash, well you are in for a treat. This amazing networking event was one I had the vision for, and without my beautiful wife/partner…this would not have become the reality it is today.

This SearchBash will be no different. You can expect the unexpected. Come enjoy free food, Premium Open Bar, Go Go Dancers, the hottest music, great places to escape and network and get some business done.

In past years, we’ve done Sumo Wrestling which was an amazing hit, no pun intended, with some of the industries biggest names jumping in for a great time squaring off against someone all in great fun.

This year, you can expect something 100% different than what we’ve ever done in this club. Come early, and a small tip…you won’t want to leave before midnight! We’ll leave it at that.
