In advance of the March 23rd – 27th Search Engine Strategies Conference in New York, keynote speaker Guy Kawasaki presents an exclusive SES webcast, “Reality Check and Twitter”.
Hosted by Search Engine Strategies VP and Publisher Matt McGowan, the webcast takes place on Friday March 6 at 1pm EST (10am PST) and requires viewer registration.
The webcast will be participatory with viewers prompted to ask questions of one of the most consistenly successful innovators and online entrepreneurs or discuss his recent book, “Reality Check: The Irreverent Guide to Outsmarting, Outmanaging, and Outmarketing Your Competition”.
“Reality Check is a compilation of Guy’s wit, wisdom, and contrarian opinions in a concise, handy book form. From competition to customer service, innovation to marketing, Guy shows readers how to ignore fads and foolishness while sticking to commonsense practices” (… from registration page)
Guy Kawasaki is one of the most entertaining and down to Earth speakers. The webcast should be fast paced, interesting and enlightening. Guy also happens to be one of the most prolific users of the micro-blogging service Twitter. Space is limited so register as soon as possible.

2009 has been an interesting and expansive year for WebmasterRadio.FM/. As regular visitors and listeners have noticed, the website looks and acts differently today than it did last week. We’ve made a number of changes in the past eight weeks. As one can imagine, making changes in a network as large as WebmasterRadio.FM is a complex and difficult undertaking.
We are proud of WebmasterRadio.FM’s accomplishments and each of the shows running on the network. WebmasterRadio.FM is among the largest online radio and podcast networks in the world. With over 15,000 historic files in our archives and nearly 25 hours of fresh content added each week, WebmasterRadio.FM is the voice of the online advertising and B2B industries. This year we want to push further.

Last Major SEO Rift Healed

Search engine optimization has existed as an online marketing service for almost fifteen years. In that time, a strong and vibrant community has formed amongst SEO specialists. Like all communities, the SEO sector has had its share of internal arguments and conflict but within such a small and highly communicative community, minor rifts can be amplified to magnificent proportions.
By far the longest standing rift in the SEO community has been that of the IHELPYOU.com/FORUMS community vs. all SEOs they perceived as black-hat practitioners. For the past seven or eight years, the members at IHelpYou.com/Forums have made it their life missions to “out” and harass SEOs using techniques they did not agree with. White-hat vigilantism led to insults, name-calling, guilt by association and sustained bombardment, the fate of those who fell under IHelpYou.com/Forum’s watchful eyes. Led by forum owner Doug Heil, the membership at IHelpYou.com/Forums have managed to piss a lot of people off. An awful lot of people.

“It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me,
You’re quoting the wrong song…” (all apologies to Sean MacGowan, Jem Finer and Pogues fans everywhere)
It wasn’t Christmas Eve though the streets of Chicago were cold enough to pass for late December. We were not in the drunk tank though listeners might have thought so had they tuned in to the Drunken Webmasters’ RoundTable broadcast live last Tuesday night. There was an old man speaking to me but that might have been any number of characters ranging from Daron Babin to Todd Friesen to Dave Naylor to Doug Heil. At some points in the evening it was hard to tell.
WebmasterRadio.FM rocked its way through the final major digital marketing conference of the year last week in our virtually complete coverage of all major events at Search Engine Strategies Chicago 2008. As the official radio and podcast network of the Search Engine Strategies Conference series, there’s a lot expected of us. We carried every keynote speech, all the Orion panel sessions, a number of individual sessions and recorded over twenty interviews with industry thought-leaders throughout three days of intensely hard work. Our goal at conferences is to act as ears for the tens of thousands of people in our industry who can’t attend themselves.
Here are some of the highlights from Search Engine Strategies Chicago 2008:
- Professor Lawrence Lessig Keynote: Remix, Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy
- Orion Panel: The State of Integration of Search
- Author Bill Tancer Keynote: We Are What We Click
- Orion Panel: The Battle of the Browsers
- Chris Winfield Interview – Igniting Viral Campaigns
- Cody Hunter Interview – Paid Search Marketing for Small Business
- The Drunken Webmasters’ RoundTable (3hours of fun and enlightenment, WebmasterRadio.FM style)
- Josh James Keynote: Avoiding Anticipointment
- John Mellor Interview – Investing in Analytics
- Tessa Fraser Interview – Rethinking Optimization
As I said, we worked hard last week. We compiled some great conversations, attended every social event and created a lot of fun of our own. There are more files where those came from waiting to be edited and archived in the Search Engine Strategies Conference channel at WebmasterRadio.FM.
Now we get to take some much needed rest time. We’re still broadcasting, podcasting and gathering great information but for the next few weeks we get to do it from our homebase in Fort Lauderdale. The crew doesn’t have to travel until the New Year and our first conference of next year is the Social Networking Conference just down the street in Miami in late January.

WebmasterRadio.FM is the official radio/podcast network of the Search Engine Strategies series of conferences. Being the official network gives us lots of access to lots of neat things and also lets us do a lot of neat things. We’re going to take full advantage of our ability to see, access and do neat things at SES Chicago.
This is the third year WebmasterRadio.FM has carried full-scale coverage from the SES conference series. We’ve gotten a good idea of what content our audience wants us to create and how to best go about making it happen. We’ve also gotten a good idea of ways we want to expand the reach of our coverage and open opportunities for others in the search marketing media. At Search Engine Strategies Chicago, we’re going try an experiment in expanding the reach of our conference coverage. We’re opening our audio streams and our interview access to a sizable group of bloggers.
WebmasterRadio.FM Livecasts from SES Chicago 2008
WebmasterRadio.FM will be creating about thirty hours of live and recorded coverage at SES Chicago. We will be carrying each of the three morning keynote speeches live starting at 9AM Monday through Wednesday. We will also be carrying live coverage of the two Orion Panels and some of the sessions. Each of these live sessions will be available in our Search Engine Strategies archives as downloadable podcasts shortly after they air.
Much of the live coverage will come from the trade show floor in booth (#505) where we have dozens of interviews scheduled with keynote speakers, panelists, moderators and conference organizers. During these special-access interviews, we will be inviting industry bloggers to join us a the booth where we will open the floor to questions and ask bloggers who specialize in the speaker’s field to sit in on the interviews.

Drunken Webmaster Round Table @ SES Chicago

Daron just announced WebmasterRadio.FM’s intention to convene a Drunken Webmaster Round Table at SES Chicago on SEO Rockstars. That sort of makes it official so we’re definitely going to do it.
Starting at or about 6:30pm (central) on Tuesday December 9th, WebmasterRadio.FM will live-cast a conversation between a bunch of drunks, each of whom happens to be a world class webmasters. Meeting in the infamous Kitty o’Shea’s at the Chicago Hilton, the panel will explore the state of the SEM industry and the SES conference in progress.
You’ve heard the buzz about buzzed conversations at the conferences. Here’s your chance to sit in on one. We’ve done this sort of thing before but I don’t think we’ve ever recorded or webcasted it (unless you count the XY7.com party at ad:techNY08).
Check out all of WebmasterRadio.FM’s coverage of SES Chicago next week live at the website or on demand in the Conference Channel on WebmasterRadio.FM

Edit: SEO Rockstars has been canceled this week. Stewart Quealy will join us on October 14th.
So coming up tomorrow on tomorrow’s SEO Rockstars 1pm EST, that’s right…more Search Engine Strategies chit chat. With Kevin Ryan moving over into an oversight role for the Advisory Board at SES, that means change is afoot with the show itself.
So tomorrow on the SEO Rockstars, we’ll be talking to Stewart Quealy who’s been promoted to one of the peeps at the helm programming Search Engine Strategies. So we’ll have a nice 30 min fireside chat tomorrow to discuss the things of interest, import and maybe even something boring and nonsensical just for your amusement.
No, seriously, Marilyn Crafts as well as Stewart were promoted and are ready to rock out! This next edition of the SEO Rockstars will find out exactly what the vision is for SES and where they see it in 12 months.
See you alll tomorrow, right here at 1pm EST for SEO Rockstars. FYI, I’ll be joined by special guest co-host: JIm Hedger. Come and join us.

So some may have seen the writing on the wall. Other’s may want to say, “I told you so!”
I say, “GET OVER IT!” As far as Search Evolution goes, this is nothing new. Time and again, we have seen our community fragment and move places due to certain loyalties that key people have been able to garner. Nothing wrong with this, all interest groups needs a leader.
Thank G-D, that there are numerous “interests” within the SEO community. Which gives way to numerous leaders and mentors to look up to for guidance. Just as with the old days, you still need to do your own research and make up your own mind. However, we’re an industry people.
We are more than just a few people gathering in a bar somewhere trading traffic or checks over a beer. We’ve grown to a massive global industry of professionals that requires leaders. Not just 1, but many respectable voices so that many different kinds of SEO’s all over the world can find someone with whom they fit with on an intellectual level, but on a level that can challenge what you know about the space in which you work and seek to provide a fit for a small part of the void which is the need for solid, reliable SEO’s/SEM’s.
I think a lot of focus has been placed on who was driving the boat over there, but I do have to say that there are enough people…with enough invested in this show for those of us who have 2 sets of eyes to not still see that SES can and still will be a formidable show.
We’ve seen our space divide and split and re-invent itself numerous times…the great thing is…this industry is obviously not going anywhere.
Stewart, Marilyn, Kevin…congrats and as we know all too well around here…the show must go on!

We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so make sure you get logged into watch and chat.

So it’s no secret, and we know it. For those who know the story, have attended, you get it.
For those who have never attended a SearchBash, well you are in for a treat. This amazing networking event was one I had the vision for, and without my beautiful wife/partner…this would not have become the reality it is today.
This SearchBash will be no different. You can expect the unexpected. Come enjoy free food, Premium Open Bar, Go Go Dancers, the hottest music, great places to escape and network and get some business done.
In past years, we’ve done Sumo Wrestling which was an amazing hit, no pun intended, with some of the industries biggest names jumping in for a great time squaring off against someone all in great fun.
This year, you can expect something 100% different than what we’ve ever done in this club. Come early, and a small tip…you won’t want to leave before midnight! We’ll leave it at that.
