Content Still Tops SEO Priorities – SES London

A panel of search engine experts at Search Engine Strategies London underscored the importance of quality website content as the top priority for strong search engine placements. The panel also reflected on the rapidly changing nature of search engine placement and the SEO process.

In his coverage of SES London, Edinburgh based search marketer Andrew Girdwood quotes speakers from the lunch hour keynote panel, “SEO, Where to Next?“, each of whom says page and site content remains the most important element effected by search engine optimization. Girdwood, who is the Head of Strategy at bigmouthmedia, offers excellent coverage of the session on his blog at arhg.net.

Moderated by Dixon Jones (Founder, Receptional Ltd.) the panel featured Maile Ohye (Senior Developer Programs Engineer at Google), Dan Cohen (Global SEO Lead at MSN), Julian Sambles (Head of AUdience Development at the Telegraph.co.uk), and Lisa Myers (CEO of Verve).

Each of the panelists noted the underlying importance of content as the primary signal for search engines. Some organizations built on quality content like the Telegraph prepare content stubs in advance of coming events. Sambles suggests constant preparation is far easier than constant reaction.

With advances towards the personalization of search results, knowing what content individual visitors want to read is extremely important. Sambles said the Telegraph examines what site visitors read and tries to tailor content to their wants. I think the assumption here is that reader preference as shown on site will also be shown in personalized search results. In other words, if the website knows what individual visitors want and manages to serve that content to them, references to that site should show in personalized results for relevant search queries.

Even with the advent of personalized search results, giving Google and other search engines a full view of your website content is extremely important. Though the article never mentions the word cloaking directly, the implication is that in most cases, cloaking remains a no-no for Google. (Perhaps the inclusion of an overall site-map showing Google all content while tailoring content to the interests of registered members is the answer)

Social media and local search are playing rapidly growing roles in search engine optimization. As the two often go hand-in-hand, media organizations are asking their staff to use social networking applications to communicate with their audience in order to draw traffic and create placement blips in personalized results.

The advent of social media, combined with long term abuse of link-focused SEO technique has made the pursuit of useful links far harder. Earned trust continues to be an important factor in the valuing of links.

The four panelists appear to have agreed that SEO as a service has not died but has fundamentally changed its focus from applied technique to communications and education. Andrew cites Google’s Maile saying, “… the barrier to entry on these SEO 101 factors has dropped. You can achieve it with WordPress plugins, for example. That’s why SEOs need to try harder to add value these days and why Google is keen to continue to communicate with website owners.”

Google and the other search engines see SEOs as important links in the chain of communication between the engines and website owners.

High end web design has become far easier over the years while at the same time is a career option for a far larger group of people. SEOs aren’t the only expert web designers working with or for an organization any more. What makes them different, as attributed by Andrew to Julian Sambles, is that, “Things change and digital marketers have their jobs because of this; they provide the solution to these new challenges.”

The Web that SEOs work on has changed fundamentally as well. Google’s Maile Ohye pointed out that the way users access applications or the Web itself has moved from double-clicking on the desktop to entering applications from the Web itself.

Maile’s observation points to a shift in the way Googlites look at the Internet environment with an increasing focus on cloud computing, networking and data storage. Whether they be apps made for mobile or apps used through a desktop computer interface, Web Apps are a major component in Google’s forward thinking thoughts.

Speaking of “forward thinking”, a line in Andrew’s piece suggests Google might make upwards of 400 changes to its algorithm every year.

The panel only had an hour to cover a rapidly evolving digital marketing environment. From the tone of Andrew’s article, it seems the panel and the audience could have spent several more hours exploring the topic. If you haven’t read it yet, here’s another link to the piece, “Is SEO dead? SES London takes a look (#seslondon)“. It’s seriously worth the read.

Five days from today several thousand search professionals ranging from SEOs to PPC experts to search engine developers will descend on the San Jose Convention Center for the largest annual search related event in the world, Search Engine Strategies San Jose. Running five days from August 10 – 14, SES San Jose is a full week of intense skills sharing, networking, evening events and eventually, physical and mental exhaustion. SES veterans eagerly await this show.

WebmasterRadio.FM will be bringing our audience full coverage of SES San Jose. We will be live-casting each keynote address, interviewing a few dozen speakers and industry luminaries, covering any and all breaking news that occurs or is announced at the event, and throwing one of our largest SearchBash parties.

As usual, we are inviting everyone attending SES San Jose to drop by our booth to meet some of our show hosts and radio personalities. You’ll be able to find WebmasterRadio.FM’s booth in the right-hand side corner of the trade-show floor, near the area set aside for lunch. Our booth number is #703, our staff is friendly and our sofas are going to be filled with live interview action virtually from start to finish.

As I wrote earlier, if you are (for whatever reason) unable to get up in time for the keynote speeches, tune in to WebmasterRadio.FM while waking. We’re live-casting all keynotes. Also, stay tuned as we will be breaking into our live-stream for special announcements, breaking news and general fun from the trade-show floor.

Tuesday night, WebmasterRadio.FM is throwing the largest party of the event, SearchBash at Pearl Nightclub (2 blocks away from the Convention Center at 8 S. First St, San Jose, CA. 95113). Because Google is NOT hosting a Google Dance this year, we expect a very heavy turnout and will not be able to allow anyone past the door who has not first RSVP’ed. Please let us know you’re coming by following THIS LINK to RSVP for SearchBash.

We are all looking forward to the coming week and hope to see you at Search Engine Strategies San Jose. Stay tuned to the network friends, we have some amazing content coming up… :)

Guy Kawasaki Talks Twitter Live on PPCRockstars, 4PM Monday

Venture Capitalist and online entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki will appear on WebmasterRadio.FM’s PPC Rockstars, hosted by David Szetela, on Monday April 20, to discuss and defend comments he made during his keynote speech to the 2009 Search Engine Strategies New York Conference. Kawasaki’s controversial comments involved the use of the extremely popular social media application Twitter for commercial and personal promotional purposes.

Guy Kawasaki has an enormous number of followers on Twitter. With over 100,000 users receiving hundreds of Twitter comments he makes each day, Kawasaki has become a lightning rod attracting praise and criticism for his mass marketing efforts. Some have called him brilliant while others say his ideas could lead to the ruin of Twitter as an effective communications tool. There is a wide and vocal debate about his tactics within the digital marketing sector.

WebmasterRadio.FM will be presenting a special episode of PPC Rockstars to give Guy Kawasaki the opportunity to speak directly to the search and digital marketing community about his comments. During the broadcast, Kawasaki and Szetela will take questions posed by listeners via Twitter, sent directly to the Twitter addresses @GuyKawasaki, @Szetela and @WebmasterRadio. Twitter users can watch and participate in the online conversation by following the hash tag #ppcrockstars, and by including that hash tag in their Tweets.

“I’m very grateful to Guy for agreeing to this interview,” said David Szetela. “We’re looking forward to some lively discussion, insider Twitter tips and witty repartee. Just in case, Guy will be wearing his virtual hockey mask.”

This will be one of the first massive interactive online radio broadcasts using Twitter and certainly one of the largest. Combining the resources and efforts of WebmasterRadio.FM, Guy Kawasaki, David Szetela and others in the digital marketing community, WebmasterRadio.FM expects to push promotion of the interview to over 750,000 Twitter users in a seven-day period. Promotion for the show has already begun with a Twitter re-tweet campaign which started on Monday April 13.

Search Engine Strategies Toronto is coming up in less than two months, running June 8 – 10 at a new venue, the Sheraton Centre on Queen Street.

As the premier search marketing conference in Canada, SES Toronto is a must-attend show for all digital marketers doing business in Canada or with Canadians. SES Toronto is also one of the smaller, more intimate search marketing shows, one at which the audience gets to spend a lot of time with the speakers. In many ways, SES Toronto reminds me of SES Chicago except it is much warmer in Toronto in late spring than Chicago is in late autumn.

With a national population the size of the state of California and an affluent, well educated Internet user base, Canada is an often untapped gem of a market. SES Toronto is a key entrance point to that market for US and international marketers.

The fine folks at Incisive Media have offered WebmasterRadio.FM listeners and blog readers a 10% discount on advanced tickets for the event. Follow this link: (DS05 10% Discount) and enter the priority code, DS05 to enjoy a well deserved discount on two days of high-level search marketing education and networking.

WebmasterRadio.FM’s Search Engine Strategies Coverage

Veni, Vidi, Confero, Vici. We came, we saw, we interviewed, we conquered.

WebmasterRadio.FM was all over last week’s Search Engine Strategies Conference in New York City. By the time our three days at the show were complete, we had gathered over thirty interviews, live-casted both keynote speeches and the packed Orion session as well as a “Drunken PPC Masters Roundtable“, and accumulated yet another lifetime of memories from a very lively week.

The SESNY09 show was a great success. Attendance was visibly higher than last year with a renewed optimism amongst the crowd that has not been present at search marketing conferences for a few months. At one point early in the conference, event organizers appeared overwhelmed with far more same-day registrations than anyone could have possibly anticipated.

The last minute surge of registrations actually forced a half-hour delay of Guy Kawasaki’s keynote address on the first morning as organizers tried to funnel as many people into the Grand Ballroom as possible. By the time Kawasaki began his presentation, the back end of the room was packed far beyond capacity. Known as one of the most entertaining and innovative entrepreneurs in tech, Kawasaki is defining the use of Twitter as an overly effective marketing tool. WebmasterRadio.FM live-casted his address which is now available in podcast format in the SES channel.

As the week wore onwards, WebmasterRadio.FM collected several interviews with speakers, CEOs, VPs, and other industry thought leaders. Those interviews are either already up in podcast format in the SES channel or are being edited for podcast as this paragraph is written.

SESNY09 was bigger and brighter than last year and our coverage reflects that. We had a lot of fun working very hard last week. On behalf of WebmasterRadio.FM, I’d like to extend a note of thanks to the amazingly professional crew from Incisive Media, to each of the people who gave us a few minutes of their time (along with a great deal of their wisdom), and to the attendees themselves. Conferences truly are the culmination of the people who orgainze, speak and attend. SESNY09 was a great conference.

You can catch all of WebmasterRadio.FM’s coverage in podcast format in the SES channel archives. The keynotes and Orion panel are already posted. We expect to have the bulk of interviews up by tomorrow afternoon. Live-stream listeners will hear interviews inserted into our regular programming grid over the coming weeks as well.

As the industry is morphing towards maturity, a great deal of change is taking place. From now until early December, WebmasterRadio.FM road crews will be out there several times each month gathering information and interviews one can only find here. Stay tuned friends, we have a lot more coverage coming this year.

My thoughts on the Media Post Rant on SES…

So to be clear, this is Daron Babin here…posting my opinion on a recent article I saw in my in-box that, quite honestly…pissed me off.
WebmasterRadio.FM has long been a supporter of Search Engine Strategies, and myself personally…I’ve been attending since the beginning of this thing. I’ve watched the animal grow and evolve into what it is today.

Hey, do we all like to think of that show in its “hey day”??? Well, ok…let’s put the brakes on.

I’ve been an SEO for 13 years now…and I’ve lectured and spoke on panels and keynoted all over the world and if there’s 1 thing I have said in almost all of my presentations…is that with SEO…the 1 constant…is “change!”

As an SEO, are you concerned about Webcrawler? Are you concerned about Lycos? Sorry guys, we still love you.

My point is, this article: Lost Buzzwords Of SES! by Steve Baldwin , Monday, March 23, 2009
